Two trackers, one connection
HabitFlame does not merge your habits into a shared list. You each keep your own tracker, your own streaks and your own reminders. Pairing adds a window between the two: with Premium on your side, the shared habits you complete show up on your partner's phone as they happen, and with Premium on theirs, theirs show up on yours. With both of you on the free version, the window shows a combined weekly count.
That design fits how couples actually build habits. One of you wants to run three times a week, the other wants to read before bed. Neither habit belongs to both of you, but you both want to know the other is keeping at it.
Setting it up
One person adds a partner from the Partners tab and sends the invite link. The other opens it in HabitFlame and the two phones are paired. If your partner does not have the app yet, the link sends them to the App Store first. No account is created and no password is shared.
Then each of you picks the habits to share. You can share everything, or keep some habits private. A habit you do not share is invisible to your partner.
What you see of each other
- With Premium on the completing person's side: each shared habit as it is completed, the streak on it, and milestone and streak-at-risk alerts.
- For both of you on the free version: a combined weekly count of what you both completed, updated when the app is opened.
- Reactions on completions that reach you, so a finished workout gets a well done.
- Nudges, which arrive as a notification.
Free accounts can send 3 nudges a month each. Premium makes nudges unlimited on the side of whoever buys it, so an evening reminder from your partner can be a daily thing.
The moment it happens
With Premium, real-time partner updates send your partner an instant notification when you complete a shared habit. If you are trying to build the same habit at the same time, say a morning walk, that ping is the small competitive nudge that gets the second person out of the door. With both of you on the free version, you see the combined weekly count for the pair, updated when you open the app, and you can nudge each other.
Habits that work well for two
- A shared goal done separately, such as both walking every day, each tracked on your own phone.
- A habit only one of you is building, where the other is the support.
- A household habit, such as a weekly tidy or a no takeout weeknight, set as a weekly target.
- A health habit with a count, such as glasses of water or medication taken morning and evening as a multi check-in.
Privacy inside the pair
Pairing shares only what you choose: which shared habits are done, your streak on them and the reactions and nudges between you. There is no location, no message thread and no access to habits you kept private. Your habits are stored on your device and in your own iCloud. With Premium, the shared habits you complete are delivered to your partner through HabitFlame's pairing service and Apple push notifications. Without Premium, the service carries your nudges, reactions and a weekly count of your completions, never individual habits. What pairing itself stores is set out in the privacy policy. Either of you can remove the partner at any time.
The tracker underneath
Every habit can be yes or no, a count, a duration or a multi check-in for something you do 2 to 4 times a day, scheduled every day, on specific days or as a weekly target. Streaks with milestone celebrations, 16 achievement badges, home and lock screen widgets including a partner widget, reminders with changing wording, a Pomodoro focus timer and a stats tab with a full year view are all part of the app.
Keeping it supportive
Pairing works best when it feels like encouragement, not surveillance. A few habits make the difference between a partner who helps and one who nags.
- Agree on nudges up front. Some people want one every evening, others only when a streak is at risk.
- React to the wins, not just the misses. A well done on a completed habit does more than a nudge on a skipped one.
- Share the habits you want help with. Keeping a habit private is fine, and it does not have to mean anything.
- Talk about a broken streak in person, not through the app. The app shows what happened. The conversation is where you work out why.
If one of you loses interest, that is fine too. Either person can remove the partner from the Partners tab, and each of you keeps your own tracker and history.
Cost for two people
Both of you can use the free version, which includes 5 habits each, all tracking types, streaks, widgets, the timer and pairing with 3 nudges a month. Premium is a one-time $9.99 purchase per person, not a subscription, and adds unlimited habits, habit stacking, smart insights, real-time partner updates and unlimited nudges. If one of you buys Premium, that person's completions arrive on the other's phone instantly; the free partner's show only in the combined weekly count.
Questions about using HabitFlame as a couple
- Do both of us need to pay?
- No. Pairing and nudges are free for both. Premium is bought per person and controls whose completions are sent: the buyer's completions reach the other instantly, whether or not the other person has Premium.
- Can we share the same habit?
- You each create the habit on your own phone and share it with the other. Each person keeps their own streak, and with Premium each of you sees the other's completions as they happen.
- Can I keep some habits private from my partner?
- Yes. You choose which habits to share with each partner. Anything not shared is invisible to them.
- What if we break up or stop sharing?
- Either person can remove the partner from the Partners tab. Your own habits and history stay on your phone.
- Does it work for roommates or friends too?
- Yes. Pairing works the same for any two people, and you can pair with more than one person.
